Sunday was the opening for Cul-De-Sac. All three of our Show us your Unionville participants were in attendance, as well as a few of their family members and partners. It was a perfectly sunny day with hot dogs and lemonade.
Working with the Varley was a real pleasure and we owe them so many thanks for the opportunity and for putting their trust in Robin and me - we were installing our contribution to the show up until the very last second... but we did it!

On our final day in Unionville we met a woman named Lynn, born and raised in Unionville Lynn like our other breakfast dates had a great perspective on the town, where it's been and where it's going. We had breakfast on Unionville main street at a place called Toogood Cafe.

Lynn is an animator by trade, she was living in Halifax but found herself back in Unionville for a contract in Toronto, three years later she is still in Unionville and still working various contracts in Toronto. Hr work sounds really awesome, it's not on the internet but that may change soon.

Lynn was really keen on the adventure aspect of our project and she planned us a kind of game to play in the flood plains of the city. This is a park system that can't really be developed on it because of it's tendency towards flooding. So in turn the land is an incredible path system lush with all the natural flora in the area. Lynn set us out playing Wilderness Bingo on our walk. While we walked we kept and eye out for a list she made ahead of time of birds, animals and plants that she had spotted on the path in the past. This was actually an awesome way to ensure that we were paying attention to our surroundings rather than just walking and talking, with out looking like I might normally do.

With out the list in front of me I will try to list everything we saw:
blue jays, orioles, cardinals, red winged black birds, cow vetch, wild dill, wild strawberries, geese, ducks, and a whole bunch more flora. Oh and I found a Saskatoon bush so i had a little snack... I don't remember if anyone else did?

When we met Lynn she walked us down Main Street Unionville before we ate and explained to us what the street looked like when she was a kid. Lynn has a love hate with her home town and was very vocal about it. I think if you listen to the podcast you will find she looks at her home with a critical and careful eye and wanting to preserve the small town feel of her exploding city.

Day two!
Today we met a charming man named Sean. He has lived in Markham for 38 years. He moved to Toronto from Dublin, Ireland in 1955 and after that he moved to Markham. Sean has seen the city change a lot in 38 years (for better or for worse) and he drove us around the city showing us new developments and old landmarks. It was really interesting, and Sean himself is quite the story teller. He had a story about everything!

The place that Sean wanted to take us to (Apple Jacks) was closed, so we settled for Cora's. Once we were on our driving tour about we stopped at a couple locations along the way, I have limited photos today because of some technical difficulties with my camera. Welcome to Unionville Brette and Robin! So begins another installment of the ongoing Show Us Your City! series with Robin Lambert and myself. We have been invited by the Varley Art Gallery of Markham to explore the city/ town of Unionville Ontario. Unionville is a little town inside Markham Ontario. The area of Markham is growing rapidly but while new subdivisions are being added to the city the area known as unionville appears to be trapped in time (or in an episode of the gilmore girls). Quaint... oh so very quaint.

so DAY ONE!
We meet Kelly an environmental technician co op student, she just completed university at the u of t with a major in Environment in Society and a second major in European Studies. We met her at T and T Bakery a real cute mom and pop joint in Markham. Kelly was born and raised in Markham and she is an active member of her community. She participates as a gardener for a local gardening project in the park near her home. And at her job she is involved with another community gardening project called Colour your Corners (a beautification project for the public corners on the streets of Markham) and another public project called Public Realm.

After our delicious breakfast Kelly took us to a couple locations. All of which were quite personal. We went to her home, which is the same house that she grew up in. We saw her beautiful backyard as well as a warped tree in front of her house where she would hang out as a child. Next she took us down the street to a park where her and her best friend used as a meeting place and finally she wanted us to go for a frozen yogurt at a place she calls 'the window' where her and her boyfriend go for dates. Unfortunately we got rained out before the frozen yogurt. In fact Robin and I got drenched and the window was closed because of the rain but we found the window so we will be back! All in all we had a most delightful first day in Unionville/ Markham.

Robin Lambert and I were just in Portland Oregon again for Open Engagement version 3.0. We decided to name ourselves 'rocketship!' this time around. This year we did a project about friendship. how do you friend someone? What has to happen to cross the line from being an acquaintance to full blown friendship? So with questions like that in mind Robin and I gave new friends and old friends at the conference a memento of our relationship. It was a cute gold button with a rocketship on it and a smaller silver button for them to share with someone new... like a chain letter. get it!? here are some pictures of friends we made.

I had the opportunity to work as a volunteer/ costume assistant (!?) during a performance by Guillermo Gomez-Pena and James Luna last week. I haven't been able to figure out how to talk about the experience yet. The last wild tues ever (?) happened this week. Alexis, Regan and Andy, Pat Swan and I performed a Christmas Mitzvah. Santa Claus showed up to the fainting goat with gifts of Hot Dogs each cooked, bunned and individually wrapped in tin foil along with some 'mens magazines'.

This Friday afternoon I will finally be talking about what I was doing all summer as one of the University of Regina's artists in residence. What was I doing? I am putting together a little slide show and it looks more like a 'what I did on my summer vacation' presentation than a 'body of work'. Oh art... it's so hard to tell you apart from my real life.

it's my favorite day of the year!! i bought this gross gash thing at the Halloween store last week and i have used it for three costumes. i'm apologizing in advance to my family who might read this blog one of them is really gross. crass. offensive. but hey... did you expect anything less? it's kind of awesome when you can use one 'prop' to make so many different and equally disgusting costumes.

Today was our last breakfast in Edmonton. sadly but truly. But we ended the week on a really high note with local artist/activist/ photographer Ted Kerr he's a really wonderful guy. I really loved the way he talked about Edmonton by using a lot of metaphors about the cities landscape and architecture to define the city as an entity. We ate at the early bird diner. The food was good, inexpensive but Robin and I ordered the French toast sandwich and it kind of just turned out to be bacon and eggs with a side of french toast, a pretty loose sandwich. delicious none the less. We had a really lovely talk about the city, the river valley, prospects of leaving Edmonton and of course we had some laughs.

After breakfast Ted decided that we should take a walk through some of the city's downtown back allies. This is a really amazing way to navigate a city (a personal favorite). Tedd took us into the river valley and up again. I can't really give a great description of where I was and how I got there, i sort of got so distracted by how wonderful parts of Edmonton look (scouts honour-Edmonton is pretty wonderful looking) that I realized half way through the walk that i was totally lost. Then at the end of our walk I found my way again. I will just give a brief description of a few of the pictures.

This is behind the library downtown. Turns out this space can't hold the weight of a lot of people on it so it can't be used as a festival or performance space like it was intended.

I liked this house. There is a chow-chow on the top deck. I loves me a chow-chow!!

This was the final destination for our walk. We went to the top of a parkade to a 'secret' spot Tedd and his friends call City Trust Beach. Its a really great spot to get a nice view of the city. and I could imagine myself going up there from time to time if I lived in Edmonton.

Then we went to a place in one of the many malls in the city for cookies!! I can not for the life of me remember the name of the shop where we got the cookies... for shame! But the mall was quite odd. honestly. look at this ceiling. the area below it was mostly empty i felt like maybe there was a human sacrifice planned to happen there later in the day.

I took close to 80 photos today. So it was hard to narrow it down. luckily we made another podcast!! click on this and it will lead you to an audio version of our day!

Oh my God Edmonton!
What a great day!! I was on another solo breakfast this morning. I ate at Dadeo with Rachelle. Dadeo serves traditional creole food and if you know me you know I long for the day I can go back to New Orleans. This place makes really authentic creole food. If I lived here I would eat there all the time. We both ate breakfast po boys with coffee. Delicious!

We talked a lot about farming and agriculture. Rachelle is a student at the University of Alberta and she works at the U of A farms in 'cereals'. so her job is to process wheat, barley canola ect. and test their proteins? okay that might not be the best description of what she does but the farm is pretty amazing. The university has a fair amount of land (i saw one field that was 250 acres) as well as a dairy farm where students do research and learn how to milk cows and take care of them. We got a tour of the dairy farm and the research facilities. I didn't take any photos of the space because i was requested not to. But the cows looks like regular dairy cows so don't worry.

You have to wear these plastic booties to see the cows!! I put my camera away once these were on. but we saw some calves and some cows and we learned a lot about what happens in the dairy farm from our impromptu tour guide a man whose name is pronounced RZA.. yeah! We also met a younger guy named Eric who talked to us about the differences between this dairy farm and other dairy farms he had worked on and different milking techniques.

While driving away from U of A farms Rachelle suggested we go somewhere she had never been before. So we went to check out the Whitemud Equine Centre that Robin and I were looking for on the first day. It was wonderful. We met Jane a T.A at the center she gave us a quick tour of the stables and told us about the kinds of classes they teach there. If you are an adult and you want to learn how to ride you should call them up. If you used to ride and you like children and horses they love to have volunteers working at the centre with kids ranging in ages and they have a program for children with disabilities. I highly suggest checking out the centre if you live in the city. If you are passing through and want to see some horses also stop in but check in at the office first.

Today we met Mary at Padmanadi. What a wonderful day. We had a really amazing vegan breakfast. Robin had a chance to eat some fake bacon and eggs benny, two things he can't normally eat and i ate ginger waffles (something i normally can't eat at restaurants) Mary ate a delicious looking tofu omelet. Mary is an American dressed in Canadian clothing. She will hopefully be a Canadian citizen in the next year or two. She works as an archivist and curator for the Sisters of Providence at Providence Centre. And she studied library studies at McGill University.

For our adventure Mary suggested that we ride the LRT (Light Rapid Transit) or Little Raphie's Train) from the north end of Edmonton to the South end and back up again. This was a really nice adventure. We did a lot of people watching and we got out to look at a few sites. We tried to go to a library but they don't open until 1:00pm. Mary was telling us that the Edmonton Public Library is a pretty well known library in "librarian circles" for being a pretty good one. Go Edmonton!!
We also looked at the little rain-forest in the citadel theater. I think I would hang out there on cold winter afternoons if I lived in Edmonton... when I live in Edmonton.
Is this a project that we are doing so I can figure out which city I want to live in next?

Today was my solo mission and I missed Robin a lot.
I met jerf. a former vancouver resident. Jerf (Jeff) and I ate at Tasty Toms I ate an omlette that was filled with meat. and we partook in some afternoon beers. Jerf and I talked a lot about things that a person could do in Edmonton, but he decided that to more realistically to show me "his" Edmonton he would prefer for me to come over for an afternoon of drinking and "shooting the shit". I met his amazing girlfriend Bernice at his house as well as his roommate Lee and his friend Choicey, who i started to call Chancy. Bernice made us grilled cheese, soup and french fries for super! She is officially my favorite person in Edmonton so far. (sorry jerf)
We also went to the starlight to see Bison, but Jerf made us late for the show and we missed it completely, it's likely that a party is happening with the band at Jerfs house right now but I came back to the hotel to get some rest before breakfast tomorrow! growing up is so responsible sometimes...

day one:We meet Margaret a local artist who takes us to the high level diner. Then we head off to the rainbow valley to try to find some horses. we fail to find horses and we get lost.

day two: We meet Jacob, a computer programmer who takes us to the sugar bowl. Then we go to Terwillager Park and we see Edmonton's upper crust.

We met Jacob at the Sugar Bowl this morning! He's a super sweet guy who works as a programmer for a company called Media Shakers. He's got a great sense of humour and the Sugar Bowl was a really great place to eat, coincidentally it is right next to the High Level Diner (where we were yesterday) I ate a mushroom and bacon omelette, Jacob had a really delicious looking eggs Benedict and robin ate a half cinnamon bun and a fruit salad.

Jacob also talked about Edmonton's parks and how they really are a gem in the city. i have to agree. Jacob sent us to Terwillegar Park. He also made a few night time suggestions, including Blues on White which I might try to go to this weekend. Terwillegar Park is huge, and absolutely beautiful, we hiked around and I took 60+ pictures, I have chosen a few that best represent the day. The park is popular among dog owners so i got to pet a lot of dogs on the trails. We also found some deer tracks but no deer. On the way back to the van we did a little trail blazing and just trekked though the woods.

Robin had a tutorial at the mac store in the west Edmonton mall yesterday. I happened upon the amusement park. Fingers crossed that someone sends us to the mall to ride the roller coaster! Also we went out to see some of the performances at Latitude 53 last night. I've included a photo of Adina Bier doing a performance at the gallery. i ate three bananas. i do not plan on eating another banana for a few months.
